Castiglion Fiorentino sits snugly between the treasures of Siena, Florence and Perugia.

Castiglion Fiorentino is famous in the region for its annual Palio dei Rioni, held in the main square on the third Sunday in June. Horses representing the different neighbourhoods of the city race around Piazza Garibaldi, as they do in Siena, but not so treacherously. Lofty Cortona, home to Frances Mayes’ Under the Tuscan Sun' and the art of Piero della Francesca in Arezzo, Monterchi and Sansepolcro, are all nearby.
