"We drove over the brow of the hill. "I need a comfort break" Pete said. He stopped the car and disappeared. While I was looking into the distance, I saw it. "There it is!" I shouted. By the time he came back to the car I was in floods of tears. Our little house in the hills of Petrelle in Umbria was in the distance. I held the key in my hand, hardly daring to believe it was mine. We drove up the strada bianca, and realised it really was ours. There began an adventure of a lifetime. "James Stephens runs an estate agency called IPN Castello based in Citerna, Umbria, which specialises in Italian properties. Choosing IPN Castello was an easy process for us as their website didn’t presume that we knew all the answers and was particularly easy to use; it allowed us to search for properties based upon area and price. Simple.
What was surprising was how much less painful and stressful it was to buy in Italy in comparison to the mess a certain UK based high street estate agent seemed to be making of the very simple sale of our house in desirable Surrey. I guess this is one of those times when you do get what you pay for, as it does cost more in fees to buy abroad in comparison to the UK’s system. But we would say that it has been worth every penny and on the whole the process has gone so smoothly we are still pinching ourselves.
James has done the clever thing and surrounded himself with a good team of people who really know their onions and are all bilingual. Carla Rossi is James’ right hand man (so to speak) and is one of the most helpful people I have ever met, which is dead handy when moving from one country to another. Over a period of 12 months, James accompanied us to a smorgasbord of properties and discussed the pros and cons of life in Italy late into the night. Meanwhile Carla was ensuring that every detail was correct, giving us information on filling in forms (including our permesso di soggiorno forms), checking our tax position and helping me get hot chocolate out of children’s clothes. Now don’t get me wrong, I am certain that there are a myriad of extremely good people out there who are more than able to help you in your search for a different life in Italy. I’m just glad we bumped into James, Carla and the rest of the gang at IPN Castello, otherwise things could have been very different."
